Reflexology

The Art and Science of Reflexology

Refelexology footReflexology is a healing art which dates back to ancient Egyptian times. It is a non-invasive and relaxing complementary therapy which is suitable for all ages. Skilful application of reflexology is believed to promote the body’s self-healing and aims to optimise physical, mental and emotional health. It is based on the principle that the feet represent a map of the entire body incorporating every organ, gland and body system. By adopting specific techniques involving gentle pressure being applied to precise points on the feet known as reflexes, a relaxation response from the body is induced.  It can also be applied to the hands and face.

Reflexologists believe that by inducing this relaxation response, respiration and blood supply to the vital organs are improved and that any blocked energy pathways throughout the body are cleared. Balance (known as homeostasis) is  restored in the corresponding glands, organs and body systems. This process encourages the body to achieve optimum health in a natural way.

The essence of reflexology is the recognition that there is a powerful relationship between every part of the body. It is therefore an excellent way to reduce a build up of emotional stress and tension which is capable of manifesting itself in physical symptoms.

Reflexology has also been shown to stimulate the brain to release chemicals that reduce pain signals and therefore can be an effective form of pain relief ¹ for a number of health complaints.
